Crochet the head and body as one continuous piece, add built-in bobble ears and popcorn-stitch feet, then sew on the separate tail for a two-piece ginger tabby. The edited version also resolves the source's “one piece” wording and clearly labels continuous spiral rounds as an editorial convention.

How to use this pattern

Read the construction convention and eye-safety note first. Work the head and body continuously, make the separate tail, then use the visual landmarks for the face, stripes, and only sewn join.

Terminology
US crochet terms

Work the head and body in continuous spiral rounds, moving a stitch marker at the start of every round. The supplied draft calls them rows but gives no joining slip stitches or turning chains; continuous rounds are the editorial convention used here. The tail is also worked in a continuous spiral.

Brackets show a sequence to repeat, and “×” shows the repeat count. For example, (sc, inc, sc) × 2 expands to sc, inc, sc, sc, inc, sc. A bobble or popcorn consumes one base stitch and leaves one stitch to work into on the next round.

Before you start

  • Choose the starting method. For chenille, chain 2 and work Round 1 into the second chain from the hook. A magic ring with 8 single crochets is the alternative.
  • Mark every round. The work is a spiral, so the marker is the only reliable start point.
  • Stuff lightly. Overfilling rounds the base and makes the cat less stable.
  • Choose the eye method before Round 10. For embroidered eyes, mark the positions now and stitch them after the body closes. For display-only safety eyes, install the shanks and backings while the head is open.

Mark or install the eyes, then stuff the head

Use the same placement for embroidered eyes and for the display-only plastic eyes shown in the photos. If you are embroidering, place removable markers at these points and add the eyes after the body is closed.

  1. 1

Count to the eye row. Count seven rounds down from the top. Place each eye between Rounds 7 and 8.

Count seven rounds from the crown before marking the first eye position.
  1. 2

Align with the ear. Line up the center of the first eye with the inner edge of the ear above it.

The dashed guide shows the vertical relationship between the eye and inner ear edge.
  1. 3

Space the second eye. Count three stitch holes across and place the second eye in the fourth hole.

Three visible holes sit between the eye positions.
  1. 4

Display-only plastic option. Turn the pupils inward and press a backing onto each shank from inside the open head. Skip this step when embroidering.

The backing is permanent once pressed fully onto the shank.
  1. 5

Check the front. Secured plastic eyes settle slightly into the chenille. For embroidery, verify that both temporary markers are level.

Check level and spacing before filling the head.
  1. 6

Stuff the head. Add fiberfill in small pieces while the 12-stitch opening is still wide.

Fill the cheeks evenly without stretching the stitches open.

Body and built-in popcorn feet: Rounds 11–18

Continue in ginger without fastening off. Round 11 is worked in the front loops only, leaving a subtle ridge between the head and body.

Round 11(FLO inc, FLO sc 2) × 4 [16]

Round 12sc around [16]

Round 13(inc, sc 3) × 4 [20]

Round 14sc around [20]

Round 15inc in each of the next 3 sts, sc 16, inc in the final st [24]

Round 16sc 12, 3dc popcorn in the next st, sc 3, 3dc popcorn in the next st, sc 7 [24]

Round 17(dec, sc) × 8 [16]

Round 18dec × 8 [8]

Before Round 17, check that the two popcorn feet face forward. Spiral drift can move them slightly; if needed, shift both popcorn stitches one stitch earlier or later while preserving 12 single crochets before the first foot, 3 between the feet, and 7 after the second.

Finish stuffing lightly before the opening becomes too small. Thread the yarn tail through the front loop of each remaining stitch, pull the opening closed, secure it, and hide the end inside.

Tail and its single attachment seam

Use ginger. The tail is the second and final crocheted piece.

Round 1ch 2, work 6 sc in the second ch from the hook; or work 6 sc in a mr [6]

Rounds 2–6sc around for 5 rounds [6]

Slip stitch in the next stitch, fasten off, and leave a long sewing tail.

  1. 1

Shape the base. Gently flatten the lightly stuffed body until the cat sits steadily.

Light stuffing lets the base flatten into a stable seated shape.
  1. 2

Test the tail position. Pin the tail low on the back and move it until the cat balances.

The tail can touch the surface and act as a rear support.
  1. 3

Sew the seam. Stitch the tail to the body while it remains pinned, then secure and hide the end.

Small, even stitches keep the attachment neat and firm.
Finished tail seam after the pins are removed.

Sewn tabby stripes

Use the warm brown chenille and add the surface details without changing the crochet counts.

  1. 1

Back. Sew two or three horizontal stripes across the upper back.

Space the back stripes evenly above the tail.
  1. 2

Head. Sew three stripes between the ears, making the center stripe slightly longer at both ends.

The longer center stripe creates the familiar tabby marking.
  1. 3

Face. Add two short stripes on each side of the face. Tail stripes are optional.

Keep the face stripes clear of the eye position.

Embroider the eyes and whiskers

If you marked the eye positions earlier, embroider both eyes now with black cotton yarn or embroidery thread. Keep them level, between Rounds 7 and 8, with three stitch holes between the centers.

Sew three whiskers on each side. Align the middle whisker with the center of the eye, then angle the upper and lower whiskers away from it. Work the whiskers after the brown stripes so the black lines remain visible.

Use the eye center as the reference line for the middle whisker.

Troubleshooting

  • The feet are off center. Undo Round 16 and move both popcorn stitches one stitch earlier or later, keeping all 24 stitches accounted for.
  • The cat topples. Remove a little stuffing, flatten the base again, and repin the tail where it can support the body.
  • The chenille sheds during sewing. Use smooth yarn in a matching color for the tail seam and embroidered details.
  • The eye markers are uneven. Recount from the crown and compare both positions before embroidering or installing permanent backings.

Frequently asked questions

Are the stripes and whiskers required?

No. They create the tabby look but do not change the crochet construction or stitch counts.

Where are the eyes placed?

Between Rounds 7 and 8, three stitch holes between their centers, with each eye aligned beneath the inner edge of an ear.

How many pieces are crocheted?

Two: the continuous head-and-body and the separate tail. The ears and feet are formed inside the main piece.

Final checks

  • Confirm the cat sits steadily on a flat surface and the tail supports rather than twists the body.
  • Check that every stitch count follows the published sequence: 8, 16, 24, 24, 16, 12, 16, 16, 20, 20, 24, 24, 16, 8.
  • Compare the two ears and two popcorn feet for matching size and placement.
  • Secure and hide every yarn end.
  • For a child-safe finish, use embroidered eyes and inspect the tail seam before handling.

The low sew ginger tabby is complete: one continuous head-and-body, one attached tail, built-in ears and feet, and embroidered surface details.
