How to use this pattern

Read the materials and technical notes first, keep every stitch total visible, and pin all components before sewing.

Materials and tools

  • DK-weight yarn in grey, white, and black; fiber and quantities are not specified
  • 3.00 mm crochet hook
  • Two 10 mm black safety eyes and white felt
  • Polyester fiberfill or another stuffing
  • Yarn needle, scissors, and pins or similar placement markers

Abbreviations and pattern notes

  • MR magic ring
  • sc single crochet
  • inc 2 sc in the next stitch
  • dec decrease over the next 2 stitches
  • [ ] x number repeat the bracketed sequence
  • (number) stitch count after the round

Prepare the eyes and face

Cut two white felt circles and make a small center opening in each. Push one 10 mm black safety eye through each circle. After BodyHead Round 13, insert them between Rounds 10 and 11, usually about 6 or 7 stitches apart. Embroider the black nose now so you can check the eye spacing before the body is closed.

Assembly and embroidered details

  1. Pin every loose piece before sewing: center the white chest on the lower front, place the ears on top, set one arm on each side, and position the tail at the lower back. Exact attachment rounds are not specified, so check the proportions from the front, side, and back.
Shows eye preparation and placement, all crocheted components, and the front, side, and back dry-fit before sewing.
2. Sew each piece to the body with its yarn tail, keeping the pinned placement. 3. With black yarn, embroider three whiskers on each side of the face. 4. With grey yarn, embroider three upward-pointing chevrons across the top of the white chest, then four chevrons underneath. Mark all seven positions first so the spacing remains even.
Shows the sewn doll before embroidery, the completed whiskers and chest chevrons from multiple angles, and the finished project presentation.

The Totoro amigurumi is complete when every piece is secure and all embroidered details are in place.
