How to use this pattern

Read the materials and technical notes first, keep every stitch total visible, and pin all components before sewing.

Pattern Overview

This Vaporeon crochet pattern builds a compact character amigurumi from separately crocheted pieces: a rounded head and body, four limbs, three head fins, a two-fin tail, a dorsal ridge, and the distinctive white neck frill. The shaping relies mainly on single crochet, increases, and decreases, with a few short rows and simple joining techniques for the details.

The project has many components, but the sequence is manageable when you crochet everything first and assemble in groups. Keep the stated stitch counts visible as you work, leave the requested sewing tails, and pin each feature before committing to its final position.

  • Techniques used: spiral amigurumi, increases, decreases, turned rows, picked-up stitches, and multi-piece assembly
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn: DK-weight acrylic yarn in light blue, dark blue, white, and butter/cream; quantities are not specified
  • Hook: 3.00 mm crochet hook
  • Gauge: Not specified
  • Finished dimensions: Not specified

Abbreviations

Abbreviation Meaning
MR Magic ring
ch Chain
sl st Slip stitch
sc Single crochet
hdc Half double crochet
dc Double crochet
inc Increase: work 2 sc in one stitch
dec Decrease: join 2 stitches into 1
dec3 Join 3 stitches into 1
[ ] × Repeat the instructions in brackets

Numbers in parentheses give the stitch count at the end of a round or row. A number after a stitch abbreviation tells you how many times to work that stitch, so sc 5 means work one single crochet in each of the next five stitches.

Vaporeon Crochet Pattern

Head

Use light blue yarn.

Round 1: MR 6. (6)
Round 2: [inc] × 6. (12)
Round 3: [inc, sc] × 6. (18)
Round 4: sc, [inc, sc 2] × 5, inc, sc. (24)
Round 5: [inc, sc 3] × 6. (30)
Round 6: sc 2, [inc, sc 4] × 5, inc, sc 2. (36)
Rounds 7–10: sc 36. (36)
Round 11: [inc, sc 5] × 6. (42)
Rounds 12–13: sc 42. (42)
Round 14: [dec, sc 5] × 6. (36)
Round 15: sc 2, [dec, sc 4] × 5, dec, sc 2. (30)
Round 16: [dec, sc 3] × 6. (24)

Fasten off, leaving a tail for attaching the head to the body later. Insert the safety eyes between Rounds 11 and 12, leaving approximately seven stitches between them. Stuff the head firmly.

Cap

Use dark blue yarn.

Round 1: MR 6. (6)
Round 2: [inc] × 6. (12)
Round 3: [inc, sc] × 6. (18)
Round 4: sc, [inc, sc 2] × 5, inc, sc. (24)
Round 5: [inc, sc 3] × 6. (30)
Round 6: sc 2, [inc, sc 4] × 5, inc, sc 2. (36)
Rounds 7–10: sc 36. (36)
Round 11: [inc, sc 5] × 6. (42)
Rounds 12–13: sc 42. (42)

Fasten off, leaving a tail for attaching the cap to the head. On the cap edge opposite that tail, identify the middle five stitches and continue with the pointed section:

Row 14: Pick up 5 stitches and sc 5. (5)
Row 15: dec, sc, dec. (3)
Row 16: dec3. (1)
Row 17: ch to finish off. (1)

For dec3, join three stitches into one; it is not the same as working three ordinary decreases in succession. Use the tail at the point to secure the triangle and the tail at the back to secure the cap to the head. Sewing through approximately every sixth or seventh stitch is sufficient. Avoid pulling tightly enough to dent the cap.

Body

Use light blue yarn.

Round 1: MR 6. (6)
Round 2: [inc] × 6. (12)
Round 3: [inc, sc] × 6. (18)
Round 4: sc, [inc, sc 2] × 5, inc, sc. (24)
Round 5: [inc, sc 3] × 6. (30)
Rounds 6–8: sc 30. (30)
Round 9: [dec, sc 3] × 6. (24)
Rounds 10–12: sc 24. (24)

Fasten off; no sewing tail is necessary.

Legs — Make 2

Use light blue yarn.

Round 1: MR 6. (6)
Round 2: [inc, sc] × 3. (9)
Rounds 3–6: sc 9. (9)

Fasten off, leaving a tail on each leg for attaching it to the body.

Arms — Make 2

Use light blue yarn.

Round 1: MR 6. (6)
Round 2: [inc, sc 2] × 2. (8)
Rounds 3–4: sc 8. (8)
Round 5: dec, sc 6. (7)

Fasten off, leaving a tail on each arm for attaching it to the body.

Head Fins — Make 3

Make two side fins and one centered top fin. Use butter or cream yarn for the base.

Whenever the instruction says ch 1, turn, begin the next stitch in the second stitch from the hook. The turning chain acts as spacing and is not worked as a stitch.

Row 1: ch 5, ch 1, turn, sl st, sc, hdc, hdc, dc.
Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc 5.

Fasten off. With dark blue yarn, pick up a row of stitches across Row 1, using the longer edge as the top of the fin.

Tail Fins — Make 2

Use light blue yarn.

Round 1: MR 6. (6)
Round 2: sc 6. (6)
Round 3: [inc, sc] × 3. (9)
Round 4: sc 9. (9)
Round 5: sc 3, dec 3. (6)
Round 6: dec 3. (3)

Fasten off, leaving a tail long enough to attach each fin to the tail. Pull the sewing tail back through each fin so that it exits from the original magic ring.

Tail

Use light blue yarn.

Round 1: MR 5. (5)
Round 2: sc 5. (5)
Round 3: inc, sc 4. (6)
Round 4: sc, inc, sc 4. (7)
Round 5: sc 2, inc, sc 4. (8)
Round 6: sc 3, inc, sc 4. (9)
Round 7: sc 9. (9)
Round 8: sc 4, inc, sc 4. (10)
Round 9: sc 10. (10)

Fasten off, leaving a tail long enough to attach the tail to the body.

Ridge

Use dark blue yarn.

Row 1: ch 10.
Row 2: ch 1, turn, work sc 3 in the next stitch—the second chain from the hook—then [sl st 2, sc 3 in the next stitch] × 3.

The finished strip has four small raised ridges, with three single crochets worked into one stitch at both the beginning and end of the chain sequence. It may curl strongly at this stage; this is expected. Stretch it into position when pinning it along the body and tail.

Cap-point shaping and the four-bump dorsal ridge sequence.

Fasten off, leaving a tail long enough to attach the ridge to the body and tail.

Frill

Use white yarn.

Round 1: ch 24, join.
Round 2: sc 24.
Round 3: sc, ch 2, hdc in the second chain from the hook, skip 1, sc; repeat until the circle is complete.

The completed frill may look too small for the neck while it is relaxed. Stretch it over the body, then pin it down and out of the way while attaching the head. The gaps created by skipping stitches may close visually once the ring is stretched; sewing those gaps closed is optional.

Assembly

Organize the components into head, body, and tail groups. Keep all sewing tails accessible until their pieces are secure.

  1. Stuff the required pieces. Stuff the head, body, legs, and tail.
  2. Test the layout. Pin every component in position and check both the front and back before sewing.
  3. Attach the legs. Sew both legs to the body first.
  4. Attach the arms. Sew both arms to the body after the legs are secure.
  5. Join the tail fins. Sew both fins to the end of the tail to form the split fin.
  6. Attach the tail. Sew the completed tail to the body.
  7. Add the ridge. Pin it from the back of the body to the tail tip. Straighten its curl while pinning, then sew it in place.
  8. Position the frill. Pull the white frill around the neck and pin it out of the way, leaving the body opening accessible.
  9. Attach the cap. Secure the cap to the head first.
  10. Position the head fins. Pin one fin upright at the top center and one on each side. Hide the loose tails before trimming.
  11. Shape the fins without direct heat. Pin the fins flat and allow them to rest before attachment. Acrylic can melt or permanently deform under an iron, so do not place a hot iron directly on the yarn.
  12. Attach the head fins. Sew all three fins securely in their pinned positions.
Pin the head fins, join the split tail, and align the dorsal ridge before sewing.

13. Join head and body. The final head round and final body round each contain 24 stitches. Align the openings stitch for stitch and whipstitch them closed.

Frill placement and finished front and side checks.

Final Check

Check the toy from the front, back, and side. The eyes should sit evenly beneath the cap, the top fin should be centered, the side fins should balance one another, and the white frill should circle the neck without obstructing the face. Confirm that the dorsal ridge follows the back-to-tail line, the tail fins form a symmetrical split, and every yarn tail is secured inside the work.

Your Vaporeon amigurumi is complete once the seams are firm, the stuffing is evenly distributed, and all pinned positions have been permanently sewn.
