How to use this pattern

Read the materials and technical notes first, keep every stitch total visible, and pin all components before sewing.

Zuko Crochet Pattern Overview

This Zuko crochet pattern creates a compact character doll with an embroidered facial scar, layered black yarn hair, a dark red coat, red trousers, and black boots with yellow trim. The project combines spiral amigurumi shapes with detailed facial embroidery, color placement, joined legs, sleeves, and layered costume trim.

Work through the components in order. Complete the head details before making the limbs, join the legs directly into the body, then add the coat panel, trim, arms, and head.

  • Techniques used: spiral amigurumi, increases and decreases, joined legs, color placement, embroidery, sleeves, and layered costume assembly
  • Finished height: Not independently verified; the supplied draft gives conflicting measurements of 17.5 cm and 12 inches
  • Hook: 3.00 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn: DK-weight yarn
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Construction: Separate head, hair cap, ears, arms, sleeves, legs, and shirt bottom; the legs continue into the body
  • Gauge: Not specified; the finished dimensions may vary with yarn, hook, and tension

Materials and Tools

  • DK-weight yarn in black, beige, dark red, red, yellow, and pink
  • Pink and red felt or felting wool, optional alternatives for the scar

  • Black embroidery or cross-stitch thread
  • Yarn needle
  • Felting needle, optional
  • Stuffing
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Two bobby pins or stitch markers for joining the legs

The yarn fibre and quantity are not specified. A DK-weight yarn is the closest match to the supplied construction; fiber, brand, and quantity were not provided, and substitutions may change the finished size.

Complete Crochet Pattern

Head

Use beige yarn.

  • Row 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
  • Row 2: [inc] x 6 (12)
  • Row 3: [inc, sc] x 6 (18)
  • Row 4: [sc, inc, sc] x 6 (24)
Technical correction: The supplied draft said dec, which would reduce 18 stitches to 12. The matching hair-cap progression and stated total require inc, producing 24.
  • Row 5: [inc, sc 3] x 6 (30)
  • Row 6: [sc 2, inc, sc 2] x 6 (36)
Technical correction: The supplied draft said dec, which would reduce the count. The matching hair-cap progression and stated total require inc, producing 36.
  • Rows 7–12: sc 36 (36)
  • Row 13: [sc 2, dec, sc 2] x 6 (30)
  • Row 14: [dec, sc 3] x 6 (24)
  • Row 15: [sc, dec, sc] x 6 (18)

Fasten off, leaving a tail approximately 20 cm or 7.5 inches long. Insert the safety eyes between Rows 9 and 10 with approximately five stitches between them, then stuff the head firmly. Embroider the mouth with several strands of black embroidery or cross-stitch thread. Yarn produces a thicker mouth; felt can be used for a more detailed expression.

Hair Cap

Use black yarn.

  • Row 1: MR, 6 sc (6)
  • Row 2: [inc] x 6 (12)
  • Row 3: [inc, sc] x 6 (18)
  • Row 4: [sc, inc, sc] x 6 (24)
  • Row 5: [inc, sc 3] x 6 (30)
  • Row 6: [sc 2, inc, sc 2] x 6 (36)
  • Rows 7–12: sc 36 (36)

Fasten off with a tail approximately 20 cm or 7.5 inches long. Fit the cap over the stuffed head and secure it with the tail in four or five places; sewing through every stitch is unnecessary. If the yarn combination changes the fit, add or remove cap rows as needed before attaching it.

Ears

Make one ear in beige and one in pink.

  • Row 1: ch 3 (3)
  • Row 2: ch 1, turn, sl st, sc, sl st (3)

Fasten off each ear with a tail approximately 12 cm or 5 inches long. Pin the ears with a slight natural curve, then sew them in place with their tails. Position the top of each ear level with the middle of the corresponding eye and about five stitches from that eye, or where the ear meets the hair-cap edge.

Embroidered Scar

The hair cap and ears must be attached before placing the scar because they provide its visual boundaries.

Fit the cap and position both ears before mapping the scar.
  1. Use pins to map the scar around the eye beside the pink ear.
  2. Thread pink yarn onto a yarn needle. Follow the pinned boundary to outline the scar, then fill the area with parallel embroidery that follows the direction of the scar.
Map the scar boundary with pins, then outline it in pink.

3. If using a felting needle, repeatedly needle-felt the pink embroidery to bring the strands together, smooth the lines, and flatten the surface.

Fill and smooth the pink scar base.

4. Repeat the process with red yarn to form a smaller inner circle, then needle-felt that area if desired.

Add the smaller red center over the pink base.

5. Embroider the eye over the red centre with black yarn. Do not needle-felt the black eye.

A felting needle is optional. The scar and eye may instead be built completely from felt or felting wool rather than embroidered yarn.

Hair

Embroider the hair over the black cap with black yarn.

Complete the scar details before starting the hair.

Shape the Fringe

Begin with the fringe. Arrange the side-swept strands around the finished face so the visible eye and embroidered scar remain clear.

Shape the fringe while keeping the eye and scar visible.

Cover the Lower Back

Add the shorter pieces of hair along the lower back of the head before moving upward. This establishes the lower edge of the hairstyle.

Establish the lower back hairline with shorter strands.

Fill the Crown

Cover the rest of the cap with black yarn strands, keeping the layer even from the sides to the crown.

Fill the crown and check the finished face from every angle.
Side and back views confirm full, even hair coverage.

Arms — Make 2

  • Row 1: With beige, MR 6 (6)
  • Row 2: [inc, sc 2] x 2 (8)
  • Rows 3–4: sc 8 (8)
  • Row 5: sc 3, 4sc popcorn, sc 4 (8)
  • Rows 6–11: sc 8 (8)
  • Rows 12–15: With red, sc 8 (8)

Do not stuff the arms. Fasten off each one with a tail approximately 20 cm or 7.5 inches long. The popcorn stitch forms the thumb; replacing it with one sc is an optional way to make a straight arm.

Sleeves — Make 2

  • Row 1: With red, ch 9 (9)
  • Row 2: sl st into the first chain to form a circle, inc, sc 7 (10)
  • Row 3: sc 10 (10)
  • Row 4: inc, sc 9 (11)
  • Row 5: sc 11 (11)
  • Row 6: inc, sc 10 (12)
  • Row 7: With dark red, inc, sc 11 (13)

Slip one arm into each sleeve. Leave the layers unattached until the sleeved arms are sewn to the body together.

Start each sleeve separately, then insert its matching arm.

Legs — Make 2

  • Row 1: With black, MR 6 (6)
  • Row 2: [inc] x 6 (12)
  • Row 3: [inc, sc] x 6 (18)
  • Row 4: BLO sc 18 (18)
  • Rows 5–7: sc 18 (18)
  • Row 8: sc 3, dec 6, sc 3 (12)
  • Rows 9–11: sc 12 (12)
  • Row 12: With red, inc 12 (24)
  • Row 13: sc 24 (24)
  • Row 14: dec 12 (12)
  • Rows 15–19: sc 12 (12)

Fasten off the first leg. Keep the second leg on the hook for joining.

Join the Legs

  1. Set the legs together with both feet pointing forward and the beginning of the round at the back, which keeps the colour changes less visible.
  2. Place two bobby pins or stitch markers through the paired stitches where the legs will connect.
  3. Make one sc in the right leg at the stitch marked by the first pin. Work the next sc into the marked stitch on the left leg.
Use two markers to keep both feet aligned during the leg join.

4. Continue around and repeat the transfer at the second marker. After this round, the two legs are joined.

Body

Read the colour-placement notes before working the marked rows.

  • Rows 1–5: With red, sc 24 (24)
  • Row 6: With dark red, sc 24 (24)
  • Row 7: sc 24 (24) — work 1 stitch in red
  • Row 8: sc 3, dec, [sc 6, dec] x 2, sc 3 (21) — work 3 stitches in red
  • Row 9: [dec, sc 5] x 3 (18) — work 3 stitches in red
  • Row 10: sc 2, dec, [sc 4, dec] x 2, sc 2 (15) — work 3 stitches in red
  • Row 11: [dec, sc 3] x 3 (12) — work 3 stitches in beige
  • Row 12: With beige, sc 12 (12)
  • Row 13: [sc, inc] x 6 (18)

For Row 7, centre the single red stitch on the chest; its exact position depends on the leg join, so mark it before starting. In Rows 8–10, centre three red stitches over that first red stitch. If a decrease would land in the red section, move it slightly earlier or later within the dark red stitches. In Row 11, place three beige stitches directly above the red section and shift any decrease to either side of them.

Stuff the legs before beginning the body decreases. Avoid overstuffing: the bottoms of the feet should press inward enough for the doll to stand. After Row 13, fasten off and finish stuffing the body.

Shirt Bottom

Use dark red yarn and work in turned rows.

  • Row 1: ch 24 (24)
  • Row 2: ch 2, turn, hdc 12, hdc inc, dc 11 (25)
  • Row 3: ch 2, turn, hdc 12, hdc inc, dc 12 (26)
  • Row 4: ch 2, turn, hdc 6, hdc inc, hdc 12, hdc inc, hdc 6 (28)
  • Row 5: ch 2, turn, hdc inc, hdc 26, hdc inc (30)
Joined lower body and the completed shirt-bottom panel.

Assembly and Finishing

  1. Trim the boots. With yellow, make two chains of 8 stitches. Use their tails to sew one chain vertically along the middle of each boot.
  2. Attach the shirt bottom. Pin the dark red panel around the waist and whipstitch through every stitch of the panel for a smooth join.
Attach the boot trim, then pin the shirt-bottom panel smoothly around the waist.

3. Add the collar. Make one chain of 24 stitches in yellow. Position it from the centre waist, around the neck, and back to the centre waist, then attach it.

4. Finish the coat edges. Make two yellow chains of 7 stitches for the lower coat edges. Make two more chains of 3 stitches; position each from the bottom of a coat edge and angle it upward. Attach all four pieces.

Position the collar and coat-edge chains symmetrically.

5. Add the belt. Make one yellow chain of 24 stitches and attach it around the waist.

6. Attach the arms. Pin both sleeved arms to check their height and symmetry. Flatten each arm-and-sleeve unit at the shoulder, thread the sleeve tail and arm tail, and use both tails to secure the layers to the body.

Complete the waist trim and test both arm positions before sewing.

7. Attach the head. Align the 18 stitches from Head Row 15 with the 18 stitches from Body Row 13. Whipstitch the opening closed. If the face sits off-centre, undo the necessary stitches, shift the head left or right, and resew it.

Align the final 18 head and body stitches before closing the neck seam.

Check the doll from the front and back, secure the remaining tails, and shape the feet so the figure stands. The Zuko amigurumi doll is complete.
