How to use this pattern

Read the materials and technical notes first, keep every stitch total visible, and pin all components before sewing.

Materials and stitch key

Materials

  • 3.00 mm crochet hook
  • DK (light worsted) yarn in red, blue, black and white
  • Black, red and white polyester felt, for the spider emblems and the felt eye option
  • Thin black yarn or thread, for embroidering the spider legs
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers or bobby pins
  • Fabric glue, if you use the felt eyes

Abbreviations (US terms)

  • BLO = back loop only
  • ch = chain
  • dc = double crochet
  • dec = invisible decrease: insert the hook into the front loop of the next two stitches and single crochet them together
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • inc = increase: work 2 single crochet into the same stitch
  • MR = magic ring
  • popcorn = 4sc popcorn stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch

Before you start

The two legs are crocheted first and joined directly into the body, so the doll is worked mostly in one piece. The body carries a column of 5 red stitches up its centre, placed with markers while you work rounds 6 to 11, and the spider emblems and eyes are added at the end, in felt or in crochet. The colour changes are the only tricky part; the stitches themselves are simple.

Checkpoint: the head ends on 18 stitches and the body neck ends on 18 stitches, so the two align stitch for stitch when you sew the head on.

Head (in red)

R1: MR 6 (6)

R2: [ inc ] x 6 (12)

R3: [ inc, sc ] x 6 (18)

R4: sc, [ inc, sc 2 ] x 5, inc, sc (24)

R5: [ inc, sc 3 ] x 6 (30)

R6: sc 2, [ inc, sc 4 ] x 5, inc, sc 2 (36)

R7-13: sc 36 (36)

R14: sc 2, [ dec, sc 4 ] x 5, dec, sc 2 (30)

R15: [ dec, sc 3 ] x 6 (24)

R16: sc, [ dec, sc 2 ] x 5, dec, sc (18)

Finish with a sl st in the next stitch. Cut the yarn, leaving a tail about 20 cm (7 inches) long to attach the head to the body later, and check that the correct side of the work faces out.

Arms (make 2, in red and blue)

R1: (in red) MR 6 (6)

R2: [ inc, sc 2 ] x 2 (8)

R3-4: sc 8 (8)

R5: sc 3, 4sc popcorn, sc 4 (8)

R6-8: sc 8 (8)

R9-14: (first arm) sc 4 in red, change to blue, sc 4 (8). (Second arm) sc 4 in blue, change to red, sc 4 (8)

R15: (in red) sc 8 (8)

The popcorn stitch is the thumb, and mirroring the colour blocks in rounds 9 to 14 puts the thumb on the correct side of each arm. If you prefer straight arms, work a sc in place of the popcorn. The arms are not stuffed. Finish with a sl st, cut the yarn and leave a tail about 10 cm (4 inches) long for sewing.

Legs (make 2, in red and blue)

R1: (in red) MR 6 (6)

R2: [ inc ] x 6 (12)

R3: [ inc, sc ] x 6 (18)

R4: BLO sc 18 (18)

R5-7: sc 18 (18)

R8: sc 3, dec 6, sc 3 (12)

R9-11: sc 12 (12)

R12-19: (change to blue) sc 12 (12)

Finish off the first leg. Leave the second leg on your hook; it stays live for the join.

Joining the legs

Position the two legs with both feet pointing forwards and the start of each round at the back, so the colour changes stay hidden. Place a bobby pin or stitch marker across the stitches where the legs will cross over, on both legs. Working from the second leg, sc until you reach the first marked stitch. The next stitch goes into the marked stitch on your current leg, and the stitch after that into the marked stitch on the opposite leg. Continue sc around, and repeat the same crossover at the second marker. The round that joins the legs is the first round of the body.

Checkpoint: after the join, the body round holds 24 stitches, 12 from each leg.

Body (in blue and red)

R1-3: (in blue) sc 24 (24)

R4-5: (in red) sc 24 (24)

Stuff the legs at this point.

R6-7: (in blue) sc 24 (24) *

R8: sc 3, dec, [ sc 6, dec ] x 2, sc 3 (21) *

R9: [ dec, sc 5 ] x 3 (18) *

R10: sc 2, dec, [ sc 4, dec ] x 2, sc 2 (15) **

R11: (in red) [ dec, sc 3 ] x 3 (12)

R12: sc 12 (12)

R13: [ sc, inc ] x 6 (18)

* On rounds 6 to 11 you keep a column of 5 stitches in red up the centre of the body. Before starting round 6, find the stitch that runs up the middle of the body; this is the middle red stitch. Count two stitches to either side and mark both. Work those 5 stitches in red on every round from 6 to 11, changing colour as you reach them. If a decrease falls exactly where a colour change belongs, move the decrease one stitch earlier or later and work a sc in its place; the exact placement depends on where your legs joined, so the red column matters more than the decrease position.

** On round 10, add one extra red stitch on each side of the column, which makes it 5 or 6 stitches wide in total depending on where your decreases fell.

Finish off and stuff the rest of the body. Stuff the legs before the decreases begin, and do not overstuff: you should be able to press the bottom of the feet in and have the doll stand.

Assembly, emblems and eyes

Assembly steps

  1. Pin the arms in place at the sides of the body, check the thumbs face the right way, and sew each arm on as a flattened piece.
  2. Cut the two spider emblem bodies from felt: a black shape resembling a figure 8 for the chest, and a red circle for the back. Embroider the spider legs onto each body with thin black yarn or thread, using a reference picture for the shape.
  3. Glue or sew the black emblem to the chest over the red column, and the red emblem to the back.
  4. Align the head with the body neck (18 stitches on each) and whipstitch closed with the head's tail.
  5. Add the eyes, in felt or crocheted, following the two options below.

Felt eyes

Cut two eyes from white felt. Glue each white eye onto a piece of black felt and, once it is firmly attached, trim the black to a thin outline around the white. Glue the finished eyes onto the head.

Crocheted eyes (make 2, in white)

R1: ch 5 (5)

R2: starting in the second chain from the hook: sc, dc, dc, hdc (4)

Pull the tail through the loop on your hook to finish. Leave a long tail for sewing.

Eye outlines (make 2, in black)

R1: ch 12 (12)

Pin the eyes onto the head to centre them, then sew them in place with their tails. Sew just enough to hold each eye; pulling too tight warps the shape. Pin each black chain at the inner corner of an eye, bring it across and around the eye to close the circle, then sew it in place with its tail.

Sewing the black outline around a crocheted eye

Final check: the emblems sit flat and secure, the eyes are level with each other, the head is whipstitched evenly on its 18 stitches, and the doll stands when you press the bottom of the feet flat.

Frequently asked questions

Is this pattern suitable for beginners?

The stitches themselves are simple, and the pattern is a good beginner project; the colour changes, especially the red column on the body, are the tricky part.

How are the legs attached?

They are not sewn on. The two legs are crocheted separately, then joined with a crossover round that becomes the first round of the body, 24 stitches in total.

Do I have to crochet the eyes?

No. The pattern gives both options: white felt eyes with a black felt outline, glued in place, or crocheted white eyes with a chained black outline, sewn on.
