Read the materials and technical notes first, keep every stitch total visible, and pin all components before sewing.

Materials and stitch key

Materials

  • 3.00 mm crochet hook
  • DK yarn in blue, red, yellow, beige and black (the sample uses Stylecraft Special DK in Lapis, Lipstick, Dandelion, Stone and Black)
  • Red and yellow polyester felt, for the cape, chest insignia and belt buckle
  • Iron-on transfer paper, for the chest insignia (optional, see assembly)
  • Black embroidery thread, for the mouth
  • 2 safety eyes, 7.5 mm or 8 mm
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers or bobby pins
  • Fabric glue

Abbreviations (US terms)

  • BLO = back loop only
  • ch = chain
  • dec = invisible decrease: insert the hook into the front loop of the next two stitches and single crochet them together
  • inc = increase: work 2 single crochet into the same stitch
  • MR = magic ring
  • popcorn = 4sc popcorn stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch

Before you start

The legs are crocheted in red and blue and joined straight into the body, which is worked in red, yellow and blue bands. The head is beige with a separate black hair cap that is tacked on in a few places, and the costume details (chest insignia, belt and cape) are felt, added at the end. Worked in DK yarn, the finished doll is about 17.5 cm tall.

Checkpoint: the head and the body both end on 18 stitches, so the head aligns stitch for stitch when it is sewn on last.

Superman crochet pattern

Head (in beige)

R1: MR 6 (6)

R2: [ inc ] x 6 (12)

R3: [ inc, sc ] x 6 (18)

R4: sc, inc, [ sc 2, inc ] x 5, sc (24)

R5: [ inc, sc 3 ] x 6 (30)

R6: sc 2, inc, [ sc 4, inc ] x 5, sc 2 (36)

R7-12: sc 36 (36)

R13: sc 2, dec, [ sc 4, dec ] x 5, sc 2 (30)

R14: [ dec, sc 3 ] x 6 (24)

R15: sc, dec, [ sc 2, dec ] x 5, sc (18)

Finish off, leaving a tail about 20 cm (7.5 inches) long. Insert the safety eyes between rounds 9 and 10, with about 5 stitches between them. Stuff firmly, and embroider the mouth with a few strands of black embroidery thread; yarn makes a thicker mouth, and felt gives a more detailed one.

Hair cap (in black)

R1: MR 6 (6)

R2: [ inc ] x 6 (12)

R3: [ inc, sc ] x 6 (18)

R4: sc, inc, [ sc 2, inc ] x 5, sc (24)

R5: [ inc, sc 3 ] x 6 (30)

R6: sc 2, inc, [ sc 4, inc ] x 5, sc 2 (36)

R7-12: sc 36 (36)

Finish off, leaving a tail about 20 cm (7.5 inches) long. Depending on your yarn, the cap may need more or fewer than 12 rounds to fit the head; adjust as needed. Use the tail to tack the cap onto the stuffed head in 4 or 5 places only, and to embroider the small curl of the fringe.

The black hair cap fitted on the head before it is tacked in place.

Ears (make 2, in beige)

R1: ch 3 (3)

R2: ch 1, turn, sl st, sc, sl st (3)

Leave a tail for sewing and finish off. Pin each ear in place with a slight curve: the top of the ear sits in line with the middle of the eye, about 5 stitches away from the eye or where it meets the edge of the hair cap.

Arms (make 2, in beige and blue)

R1: (in beige) MR 6 (6)

R2: [ inc, sc 2 ] x 2 (8)

R3-4: sc 8 (8)

R5: 4sc popcorn, sc 7 (8)

R6: sc 8 (8)

R7-15: (in blue) sc 8 (8)

Leave a tail for attaching to the body and finish off. The arms are not stuffed. The popcorn stitch is the thumb; for straight arms, work a sc in its place.

Legs (make 2, in red and blue)

R1: (in red) MR 6 (6)

R2: [ inc ] x 6 (12)

R3: [ sc, inc ] x 6 (18)

R4: BLO sc 18 (18)

R5-7: sc 18 (18)

R8: sc 3, dec 6, sc 3 (12)

R9-11: sc 12 (12)

R12: (in blue) BLO sc 12 (12)

R13-19: sc 12 (12)

The back-loop-only rounds help the foot sit flat. Finish off the first leg with no tail. Leave the second leg on your hook, and keep the leg that is still on the hook as the right leg, so the round's colour change later sits at the back of the doll.

Joining the legs

Position the two legs with both feet pointing correctly, and place two bobby pins across the stitches where the legs will join. Work sc on the right leg up to the marked stitch (usually 4 more stitches), then make one sc in the marked stitch on the right leg; the next sc goes into the marked stitch on the left leg. Continue around and repeat the crossover at the opposite bobby pin. The join round is the first round of the body and holds 24 stitches.

Join the two legs: mark the crossover stitches, work the joining stitch, then continue around both legs.

Body (in red, yellow, blue and beige)

R1-3: (in red) sc 24 (24)

R4-5: (in yellow) sc 24 (24)

R6-8: (in blue) sc 24 (24)

Stuff the legs at this point.

R9: sc 3, dec, [ sc 6, dec ] x 2, sc 3 (21)

R10: [ dec, sc 5 ] x 3 (18)

R11: sc 2, dec, [ sc 4, dec ] x 2, sc 2 (15)

R12: [ dec, sc 3 ] x 3 (12)

R13: (in beige) sc 12 (12)

R14: [ sc, inc ] x 6 (18)

Finish off and stuff the body.

Checkpoint: 7 crocheted pieces in total: head, hair cap, 2 ears, 2 arms and the joined legs-and-body piece, plus the felt cape, insignia and buckle.

Assembly and costume details

Assembly steps

  1. Tack the hair cap onto the stuffed head in 4 or 5 places with its tail, embroider the fringe curl, and sew the ears on at the edge of the cap.
  2. Make the chest insignia: print the logo onto iron-on transfer paper and iron it onto red felt, then trim to shape and glue it to the chest with fabric glue. Without transfer paper, cut the S from red felt and the diamond from yellow felt, or embroider the logo instead; the cut-felt version gives less definition.
  3. Using red yarn, sew belt holders at even intervals around the yellow band, leaving a larger gap at the front, and glue on a small circle of yellow felt as the belt buckle.
  4. Pin the arms in place and sew them on as flattened pieces, so they rest against the sides of the body.
  5. Cut the cape from a rectangle of red felt, trimmed until it matches your doll, and sew it around the shoulders and the back of the neck with red yarn.
  6. Align the head with the body (18 stitches on each) and whipstitch closed.
Make the chain-3 ears, pin them level with the eyes, then sew them on.
Fix the S insignia to the chest, above the yellow belt holders and felt buckle.
Cut the cape from red felt and check it against your doll before attaching it.
Whipstitch the head to the body over the cape as the final step.

Final size: about 17.5 cm tall in DK yarn with a 3.00 mm hook, wearing a red felt cape.

Questions crocheters ask about this pattern

Is Superman a good beginner pattern?

Yes. The source describes it as a nice straightforward pattern for beginners; the pieces are simple shapes, and the costume details are felt rather than crochet.

How is the hair attached?

The hair is a separate crocheted cap. It is not sewn all the way around; its tail tacks it to the head in 4 or 5 places, and the same tail embroiders the small curl on the fringe.

Do I need iron-on transfer paper for the chest logo?

No. It gives the sharpest result, but you can also cut the S from red felt over a yellow felt diamond, or embroider the logo directly onto the chest.

Superman is a DC Comics character. This is an unofficial fan-made pattern, not affiliated with or endorsed by DC Comics or Warner Bros.
